Leukemia

The diagnosis of leukemia is devastating to most people. Leukemia means excessive number of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow which in turn causes low red blood cells and platelets. Not all leukemias are dangerous. Generally acute leukemias are more critical than chronic leukemias. A lot of progress has been made towards effective treatments of all leukemias. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia sometimes may not even require treatment and chronic myeloid leukemia can be cured with new targeted therapies.

Treatments of leukemias may involve hospitalization but can also be treated with oral drugs as an outpatient.
